Why Speaking in tongues is the only evidence of receiving Holy Spirit

First: Positive proof

1,The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”(John 3:8 NIV)

When the wind comes, you could not see the wind. But when you hear the sound of the wind, you know the wind has come. It is the same for everyone who has received the Holy Spirit. You can-not see the Holy Spirit but you hear people Speaking in tongues. Then we know they receive the Holy Spirit. Everyone who receives the Holy Spirit will speak in tongues.

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”...Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”(John 3:3,5-8 NIV)

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. ...Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. (Acts 2:1-3,33 NIV)

2,Cornelius people receive the Holy Spirit, how do Peter and the other six co-works know? They know through they speak in tongues and praise the God. Previously they already praise God but have not receive the Holy Spirit. Peter said: they have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.

“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?” (Acts 11:15-17 NIV)

Here describe the process of Cornelius people speaking in tongues is same with apostles when they spoke tongues on the day of Pentecost. That is receiving Holy Spirit which is also called being baptized with the Holy Spirit.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and prais-ing God. Then Peter said, “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. (Acts 10:44-48 NIV)

3, How did Paul know Ephesus believers receive the Holy Spirit? He knew it through they spoke in tongues and prophesied. In old covenant people already could prophecy but they had not re-ceived Holy Spirit. So the evidence of receiving Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. Before Paul came, Ephesus believers hadn't received Holy Spirit. But after Paul came and re-baptized them, he knew around 12 people received Holy Spirit. The number is so clear since it can be easily known who can speak in tongues.

and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you re-ceive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied. Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all. (Acts 19:2-7 NIV)

4, It can be known if believers have not received the Holy Spirit.

Samaria believers have not received the Holy Spirit. Everyone knows it. Ephesus believers have not received Holy Spirit. It can be known. Before Peter came, Cornelius family had not received Holy Spirit. Everyone knew. During the period from Jesus being taken up to heaven to Pentecost, Peter and other apostles have not received Holy Spirit. They themselves also knew it.

Sesond: Evidence in another side

1, Believe in Jesus, does not mean receive the Holy Spirit. Samaria people believe in Jesus, but they have not received the Holy Spirit.

Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. ...But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Je-sus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. ...because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:5-6,12,16 NIV)

2, Accept the word of God, doesn't mean receive the Holy Spirit. Samaria believers accepted the word of God but they have not received Holy Spirit.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:14-16 NIV)

3, The disease was healed, doesn't mean you have received Holy Spirit. Samaria believers believe in Jesus and the disease was healed but they have not received Holy Spirit.

For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. ...When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been bap-tized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:7,15-16 NIV)

4, believe in Jesus and the heart has rejoice, doesn't mean receive the Holy Spirit. Samaria people believe in Jesus and the whole city is in rejoice. But they have not received the Holy Spirit.

So there was great joy in that city. ...When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:8,15-16 NIV)

5, believe in the name of Jesus Christ and the gospel of the Kingdom, doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. Samaria people believe the name of Jesus and gospel of Kingdom but they have not received the Holy Spirit.

But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. ...When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:12,15-16 NIV)

6, be baptized with water, doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. Samaria people have been baptized but they have not received the Holy Spirit.

When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spir-it, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:15-16 NIV)

7, Do many good things does not mean have received the Holy Spirit. Cornelius did many good things, but at that moment he had not received Holy Spirit.

At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Reg-iment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. (Acts 10:1-2 NIV)

8, See the vision doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. Cornelius had seen visions but at that moment he hadn't received the Holy Spirit.

One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!” Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering be-fore God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. (Acts 10:3-5 NIV)

9,.The prayer reaches God doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. God listen the prayer from Cornelius but at that moment he has not received the Holy Spirit.

Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. (Acts 10:4-5 NIV)

10, Prayer with godliness doesn't mean you have received the Holy Spirit. Cornelius prayed with godly heart but he hadn't yet received the Holy Spirit.

He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. ...Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The an-gel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. (Acts 10:2,4-5 NIV)

11, Leading people to fear God doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. Cornelius led family to fear God but he hadn't received the Holy Spirit.

He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. ...When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa. (Acts 10:2,7-8 NIV)

12, Good behavior doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. Cornelius had good behavior but at that moment he hadn't received the Holy Spirit.

Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?” The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” (Acts 10:21-22 NIV)

13, cast out demon in the name of Jesus doesn't mean have received Holy Spirit. Jesus sent seven-ty people to cast out demon in the name of Jesus but they have not received the Holy Spirit.

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven....However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(Luke 10:17-18,20 NIV)

14, have the spiritual gift of apostle doesn't mean you have received the Holy Spirit. Juda is apos-tle but he has not received Holy Spirit. Peter is apostle but before Pentecost he has not received the Holy Spirit.

After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John bap-tized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”(Acts 1:3-5 NIV)

15, to be prophet to preach doesn't mean have received the Holy Spirit. Zechariah was a prophet and filled with Holy Spirit but he has not received the Holy Spirit. Receiving the Holy Spirit only happened after Jesus glorified Himself.

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. (John 7:37-39 NIV)
